New hope for glioblastoma therapy

The Molecular Neuroimaging in Psychiatry group has been awarded a three-year grant from Fond’Action contre le cancer to support a groundbreaking translational research project targeting glioblastoma, one of the most aggressive and currently incurable brain tumors.

Entitled “Overcoming the Blood-Brain Barrier with low-intensity ultrasound for CAR-T cell therapy of glioblastoma”, the project combines two cutting-edge strategies:

  • Low-intensity focused ultrasound (LiFUS) to transiently open the blood-brain barrier,
  • CAR-T cell therapy, a powerful immunotherapy that reprograms a patient’s own T cells to target and destroy cancer cells.

By merging these two technologies, the researchers aim to enhance CAR-T cell delivery to brain tumors and improve therapeutic outcomes. This pioneering approach could become a game-changer in glioblastoma treatment.

The project brings together a multidisciplinary team from the University of Geneva and Geneva University Hospitals (HUG):

  • Prof. Philippe Millet and Dr Laurene Abjean, Department of Psychiatry – Faculty of Medicine, UNIGE / HUG
  • Dr Kelly Ceyzériat, CIBM Center for Biomedical Imaging – Preclinical imaging section, UNIGE / HUG
  • Prof. Rareș Salomir, Department of Radiology and Medical Informatics, UNIGE / HUG
  • Prof. Denis Migliorini, M.D., Department of Medicine – UNIGE / HUG, Agora Translational Cancer Research Center

👏 Congratulations to the entire team for this remarkable achievement, which exemplifies the power of interdisciplinary collaboration in neuro-oncology.
