Innovation Against Brain Tumors

The Foundation for Medical Research congratulates Fond’Action Against Cancer for supporting the pioneering project led by Prof. Philippe Millet and Dr. Denis Migliorini (HUG - University Hospitals of Geneva), aiming to improve the treatment of brain tumors through cell therapy.

Overcoming the Brain Barrier with Ultrasound and CAR-T Cells

Brain tumors, such as glioblastoma, carry a poor prognosis and a high risk of recurrence after standard treatments (surgery, radiotherapy, and chemotherapy).

One of the major obstacles in treating these tumors is the blood–brain barrier (BBB), which prevents many therapies from reaching the tumor. The Geneva team is developing an innovative approach combining CAR-T cells — T lymphocytes genetically engineered to target tumor antigens — with low-intensity ultrasound.

This combination could temporarily and safely open the BBB, allowing CAR-T cells to reach the tumor site more effectively and improve their therapeutic potential.

From Preclinical Models to Clinical Promise

The research will first focus on animal models to:

  • demonstrate safe, reversible BBB opening using ultrasound,
  • confirm CAR-T cell penetration into brain tumors,
  • evaluate their anti-tumor efficacy.

Once validated, this innovative approach could pave the way for a new generation of targeted brain tumor treatments.

Congratulations to the entire team — Kelly Ceyzériat, Laurène Abjean, Rareș Salomir, Denis Migliorini, Philippe Millet — for their inspiring and visionary contribution to cancer research.
